The most common domestic system in the UK is a split system (also called a mini-split or ductless system) — an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor units. Multi-split systems can serve multiple rooms from a single outdoor unit. Ducted systems distribute cool air through ceiling voids but are expensive to retrofit. Portable units require no permanent installation but are noisy, inefficient, and need a window for the exhaust hose.
Cooling and heating: the heat pump connection
Modern air conditioning units are heat pumps — they can both cool in summer and heat in winter. In mild climates like the UK, an air conditioning unit running in heating mode is a viable supplemental or primary heating source, particularly for rooms that are hard to heat conventionally. Efficiency in heating mode (expressed as COP) can reach 3.5-5 at temperatures above 7°C.

Planning permission
Installation of an air conditioning outdoor unit on an external wall or roof typically falls under permitted development — provided: the unit is not on a wall or roof slope facing a highway; the unit is not on a listed building; and the installation meets noise limits. Check with your local authority if you are in a Conservation Area or if the unit would be particularly visible from the street.
Installation costs and F-gas compliance
A single-room split system typically costs £1,500-£3,000 installed, depending on the brand and installation complexity. Multi-room systems cost proportionally more. All systems using refrigerant must be installed by an F-Gas certified engineer — this is a legal requirement, and any installer who is not F-Gas certified is operating illegally. Always check your installer's F-Gas registration.
